Story

Here’s Herbie, my beautiful, smart 3 year old cat. I adopted him two and a half years ago from a shelter in New Fairfield. He loves to snuggle. He and I have spent lots of time together with him on my chest or on my legs, purring away. He waits for me at the door when I go out. Herbie loves food and I have been able to teach him a couple of tricks using the clicker method and rewarding him with treats. He needs lots of attention. He likes to play; for example, to chase down plastic spring-y toys. But doesn’t like anyone to touch his feet and he hates being in the car.Although most of the time he is a loving, lovable pet, Herbie bites, which is why I’m sadly giving him up.

Story

Found kitten in front of a church in Westville days before snowstorm around late January 2024. I estimate he was about a month old when I've found him. He is the perfect companion - I can see him doing very well with a family and other animals. He loves fishing rod toys, window perches, and cuddles.

PORTABELLA IS IN HER FOSTER HOME IN MEMPHIS, TN AND WILL BE TRANSPORTED TO CT ONCE SHE IS ADOPTED! Portabella is a gorgeous grey/white British/Domestic shorthair mix. She was loved by someone at some time but showed up at a colony one day to be fed. The colony caregiver noticed that she was definitely friendly and thought she was a "he" because there were no litters over several months.  One day she showed up terribly injured (having been caught in a car engine) and the caregiver reached out for help.  We sprang into action and got her to our vet, surgically repaired her broken jaw, and got pain meds for her carpal hyperextended leg.  We also discovered she had a spay tattoo and had been previously spayed.  After no-one came forward (no microchip) to claim her, one of our fantastic fosters agreed to make a spot for her and her beautiful personality blossomed during recovery. Portabella loves a cushy window seat to view the outside and make biscuits.  She LOVES her wet food (the diet during jaw repair) so she will likely beg for it. :)  She likes to snuggle but will get into "play" mode quickly with a few soft nibbles.  She would make a great kitty for a family with older kids familiar with cats. She prefers to be the only kitty, but will tolerate younger kitties. She has been spay/neutered, microchipped, had all age appropriate vaccines, and a confirmed negative FeLV/FIV test.  The adoption fee of $295 includes the transport to CT.  We use a licensed and registered USDA transport company that will deliver Portabella up north to her new family. If you are interested in adopting, please go to our website and complete our adoption application at this link:  http://www.newbeginningsanimalrescue.net   Once your application is received and processed you will be contacted by an NBAR Volunteer. Should I adopt a stray kitten? ›

Adopting a stray cat can be an incredible act of kindness, but it's essential to approach the decision with care and consideration. Safety should be a top priority, including health checks, behavior assessments, and allergy testing if necessary.

What is the youngest you should adopt a kitten? ›

At most shelters and rescues, kittens can be adopted starting at 8 weeks. Breeders will often wait until the kitten has been with their mother for at least 12 weeks, with many breeders waiting until 14 weeks. That's because there are many perks to sticking around their furry family members.

How do you pick a friendliest kitten? ›

A timid kitten might not be the best choice for a home with children who want to play with the kitten. If you get down on the floor, how do the kittens react to you? A well-socialized kitten should be comfortable with you and unafraid. Use something (other than your finger or hand) to entice the kittens to play.

Do stray cats get sad when you take their kittens? ›

Yes, cats can feel sad when their kittens are given away. Mother cats form strong bonds with their kittens, and they may experience a range of emotions when they are separated, including sadness, grief, and anxiety. However, it is important to note that cats do not experience emotions in the same way that humans do.

Can I keep a stray kitten? ›

Unless they're in danger, it's best to leave stray kittens outside so the mother cat can comfort them upon her return. Crate them in a carrier to keep the kittens safe and secure, and, if needed, to provide an easy way to move them to the nearest municipal animal control/animal services centre.

Is it okay to take kittens from a stray cat? ›

Older kittens can also be captured and tamed, but the process becomes slower and less successful the longer the kittens stay in the wild. They should not be taken from the mother before they are old enough to be weaned at about 4 weeks. Kittens taken too young are vulnerable to disease and may not survive.

How do you know if a kitten will be a good cat? ›

Friendly kittens who interact with people without fear have the best chance to be a good pet. Outgoing kittens who respond to things like q tips, pieces of string, and small balls are a good bet. Responding to gentle rubbing and purring is another positive sign.

Is it OK to adopt one kitten? ›

Kitten Companionship

Kittens are curious and crave constant stimulation. When bored, a single kitten will find potentially troublesome ways to entertain himself – like chewing on plants, climbing drapes and furniture, unrolling toilet paper, or exploring electrical cords and sockets.

What to do when first adopting a kitten? ›

Having a consistent feeding time and time for exercise or play helps your cat acclimate to their new home. Keep their environment calm. Don't overwhelm them with lots of visitors or activity during the first week or two after coming home. Provide lots of mental enrichment activities.

Will a friendly kitten be a friendly cat? ›

While it's far from a guarantee, a cat's genetics and breed can affect how easily she can be socialized. Studies have found that kittens born to a friendly and affectionate cat often inherit that temperament.
