Equipment

  • Stand Mixer This KitchenAid Stand Mixer is a must-have tool for any home baker!

Ingredients

  • 1 (13.25 oz.) Red Velvet Cake Mix
  • 1 (8 oz. pkg.) cream cheese room temperature
  • 1/2 cup butter (1 stick) room temperature
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 1 (3.25 oz. bottle) Red Sugar sprinkles
  • 2 pkgs. Hershey's Candy Cane Kisses about 48 kisses

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line cookie sheets with a silicone making mat or parchment paper. Set aside.

  • Using a stand or hand mixer, cream together the butter and cream cheese. Add the egg and extract and cream together until fully incorporated and a smooth consistency. Gradually add the cake mix approximately one cup at a time, stopping to scrape down the sides of the bowl. Batter will be thick. Refrigerate the dough for 1-2 hours. This will help the dough be less sticking when handling and rolling into balls.

  • In a separate medium bowl (like a cereal bowl) pour about half of the red sugar sprinkles.

  • Roll cookie dough into 1" balls, and then roll the dough balls in the red sugar sprinkles. Place about 1 dozen cookie balls onto the prepared cookie sheets and bake at 350 for 9-10 minutes.

  • While cookies bake, unwrap the kisses, so they are ready to go when cookies come out of the oven. When cookies are done baking, immediately press a kiss into the center of the cookie, and let cookies cool on the sheet for 5 minutes.

  • Transfer cookies to cooling rack to cool completely. Serve right away or store in airtight container at room temperature. Can also freeze cookies, and bring to room temperature prior to serving.

Notes

Milk chocolate, dark chocolate or white chocolate kisses can also be substituted for the candy cane kisses.

FAQs

What's the difference between red velvet and chocolate cookies? ›

Most chocolate desserts have large amounts of cocoa powder and/or melted chocolate bars giving them an intense chocolate flavor. Red velvet on the other hand is far more complex. It has a vanilla base, but with the raw cocoa powder it has a soft and velvety crumb and a subtle chocolate flavor.

Is Red Velvet just chocolate cake? ›

While Chocolate Cake is made primarily with cocoa powder and sometimes melted chocolate, Red Velvet Cake is made with a small amount of cocoa powder, but is also known for its signature bright red color, which is usually achieved by adding red food coloring to the batter.

Why do many chocolate chip cookie recipes contain baking soda and brown sugar? ›

As the butter melts, the cookie's structure loosens, so that the water in the dough is able to combine with the baking soda, dissolving it. The baking soda then reacts to the acidic components present in brown sugar, creating gases that cause the cookie to rise.

Why are my red velvet cookies Brown? ›

If you skip the food coloring, the cookies will be light brown. For the pictured cookies, I use 3/4 teaspoon gel food coloring. You can control how vibrant the red color is, so use more or less depending on the color you'd like. You can find gel food coloring in craft stores, some grocery stores, or online.

Is red velvet more chocolate or vanilla? ›

What flavor is red velvet cake supposed to be? ›

Due to the fact that it uses cocoa powder rather than chocolate, red velvet cake is more subtle in chocolate flavor than a chocolate cake. In terms of the cocoa flavor concentration, we like to think of red velvet cake as somewhere between a vanilla/white cake and a chocolate cake.

What happens if you use more brown sugar than white sugar in cookies? ›

Using brown sugar will result in a denser, moister cookie. Brown sugar is also hygroscopic (more so than granulated sugar) and will therefore also attract and absorb the liquid in the dough.

What happens if you only use brown sugar in cookies? ›

Brown sugar, meanwhile, is dense and compacts easily, creating fewer air pockets during creaming—that means that there's less opportunity to entrap gas, creating cookies that rise less and spread more. With less moisture escaping via steam, they also stay moist and chewy.
